FIRST® LEGO® League Explore Volunteer Role Descriptions

  • Ceremony Assistant
  • Emcee
    • Brief description
      • Is the master of ceremonies for the event, keeps the event on time but also entertaining to watch. 
    • Responsibilities
      • Reading the script written by the event coordinator
      • Presentation of awards
      • Keeping the “show” on time 
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Articulate when speaking
      • Able to think on your feet and articulate what is happening during the games.
      • Confidence in being in front of crowds
    • Time Commitment
      • Whole day for the event
    • Reports to: Event Coordinator
  • Floater
    • Brief description
      • Fill specific volunteer positions for ‘no show’ volunteers and serve to fill-in to allow volunteer breaks
    • Responsibilities
      • Provide assistance in various areas as determined by the manager of event-day volunteers 
      • Often helps with last-minute tasks as identified by event staff and key volunteers.  
      • Be flexible and adaptable for any task that comes up
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • No training required
      • Minimum Age Requirement: Dependent on role assigned
    • Time Commitment
      • Day of the event (~4 hours)
    • Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator 
  • Load In/Out
    • Brief Description
      • Help with venue set up and breakdown  
    • Responsibilities
      • Help setup the venue
      • Help teams load their models into and out of the festival space
      • Assist with event clean-up
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Physically active role
      • Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 15lbs
    • Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator
  • Reviewer
    • Brief description
      • Help to supervise the activities available for team members and spectators at the festival.
    • Responsibilities
      • Visits teams in the main festival display area and/or meet with teams in a separate area 
      • Asks team members about their team journey, their model, and their team poster 
      • Provide positive feedback and write down notes to help with awards later  
      • Help to assign awards to the teams from the approved award list
      • Participates in the closing ceremony 
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • FIRST experience preferred, but not required 
      • Minimum Age Requirement: 15, 18 preferred
    • Time Commitment
      • Day of Event (~4 hours)
    • Reports to: Head Reviewer
  • Team Activities
    • Brief description
      • Help to supervise the activities available for team members and spectators at the festival.

  • Queuer
    • Brief description
      • Manage team traffic and access to reviewing areas
    • Responsibilities
      • Call teams to the reviewing areas based on the schedule
      • Help transport team models if needed
      • Restrict unauthorized access to reviewing rooms
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Age: 15+ (13 with a parent)

  • Assistant Scorekeeper
  • Crowd Control
    • Brief description
      • Direct and manage people to ensure event security
    • Responsibilities
      • Only allow authorized volunteers and staff near match tables
      • Only permit approved individuals to watch the judging
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Age: 18+
    • Time Commitment

      • Photographs and takes videos of the event and edits photos for later marketing use.

      • Takes pictures of students participating / mentors / judges / advisors / competition shots, action shots, volunteers, etc.

      • Whole day of the event

  • Field Resetter
  • Floater
    • Brief description
      • Floaters provide assistance in various areas as determined by the manager of event-day volunteers and often help with last-minute tasks. Floaters often fill specific volunteer positions for ‘no show’ volunteers.

      • Provide assistance in various areas as determined by the Volunteer Coordinator.
      • Help with last-minute tasks as identified by event staff and key volunteers.
      • Fill specific volunteer positions for ‘no show’ volunteers and serve to fill-in to allow volunteer breaks.
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Minimum age is dependent on the role assigned
    • Time Commitment: Minimum age is dependent on the role assigned; Floater role is good for people who can’t dedicate a whole day to events as they can generally hop into smaller roles (or roles that require less time commitment or training) as needed
    • Reports to: Event Coordinator (or Volunteer Coordinator)
  • Judge Advisor Assistant (JAA)
    • Brief description
      • Assists the Judge Advisor and Judges throughout the event
    • Responsibilities
      • Manages team traffic before and after judging sessions. 
      • Assist with keeping judging sessions on schedule
      • Assist with keeping waiting teams quiet
      • Assist with assuring teams are sent to correct judging location
      • Help prepare and break-down judging rooms.
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Judge training would be helpful (not necessary)
      • Minimum Age Requirement: 18
    • Time Commitment:
      • Day of Event (~4 hours)
    • Reports to: Lead/Head Judge 
  • Judge
    • Brief description
      • Interview and observe teams together with other judges in the same judging group
    • Responsibilities
      • Serve as a mentor and role model for the team members, motivating them with useful feedback. 
      • Participates in deliberation process and as needed, in writing short awards scripts extolling merits of winning teams. 
      • Assists with closing ceremony in recognition of and award presentations to the teams. 
    • Experience/Skills Needed:
      • In-Person Training (2-3 hours)

    • Brief description
      • Manage and lead teams to and from their designated area
    • Responsibilities
      • Create unrestricted paths to and from the pit area to the game area
      • Ensure orderly flow of robots/teams to and from the areas to keep matches running on time
      • Direct and stage teams to holding areas
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Previous experience as a queuer
      • Minimum Age Requirement: 15

    • Brief description
      • Manages traffic to and from the playing field
    • Responsibilies
      • Restrict access to competition area from unauthorized individuals
      • Communicate with the Lead Queuer and other queuers to make sure teams are ready for their match
      • Ensures smooth traffic flow and maintenance of overall event pace
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • Minimum Age Requirement: 15

  • Pit Administrator
    • Brief description
      • The Pit Administrator provides and distributes critical information to teams and serves as the “information hub”, answering questions by teams and guests about the day—from schedule to venue information.
    • Responsibilities
      • Provides and distributes critical information to teams as needed.
      • Answer all questions by teams and guests about the day—from schedule to venue information.
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • FIRST LEGO League experience preferred, but not required.
      • FIRST Data Protection training required.
      • Minimum age requirement: 21
    • Time Commitment
      • Training: 2 hours
      • Event Day: 10 Hours
      • 4 hours for before and after event day setup and breakdown

    • Brief description
      • The Practice Field Attendant provides direction, assistance, information, and support to teams at practice tables in the Pit. They manage the practice table schedule and oversee field model pieces.

    • Time Commitment: Minimum 1 day (?)

  • Volunteer Room Assistant
    • Brief description
      • The Volunteer Room Assistant monitors and maintains the volunteer hospitality room and assists with volunteer check-in as needed.
    • Responsibilities
      • Monitor and maintain the area assigned to volunteers to relax, store belongings, mingle, and eat.
      • Assist with volunteer check-in.
    • Experience/Skills Needed
      • FIRST experience preferred, but not required. 
      • FIRST Data Protection training required.
      • Minimum Age Requirement: 18
    • Time Commitment: Can be divided among multiple volunteers for the duration of the event
